CODE Meee Planned and Exhibited an Original Fragrance at the Hokkaido University 150th Anniversary Ceremony
On Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, 2026, the Hokkaido University 150th Anniversary Ceremony was held mainly at Sapporo Cultural Arts Theater hitaru and Sapporo Cultural Arts Community Center SCARTS. In collaboration with the booth area of the commemorative photo exhibition “Memories of the Campus and Its Students,” one of the ceremony’s events, CODE Meee planned and exhibited an original fragrance.
Collaboration with the Photo Exhibition “Memories of the Campus and Its Students”
The commemorative photo exhibition “Memories of the Campus and Its Students” presents the changing landscape of the Hokkaido University campus and nostalgic scenes of student life through photographs contributed by alumni and the public. Visitors can trace memories of learning and connection through familiar scenery, and glimpse the history that the university and its students have built together.
Under the theme of “memory and scent,” we wished to celebrate the university’s 150th anniversary by filling the exhibition space with a special fragrance. Working with ai-X Inc. (Shin-yo Co., Ltd.), a startup born at Hokkaido University, we developed the original scent as a fragrance project that current Hokkaido University students also joined as volunteers.
Original Fragrance “Kita no Tsuioku” (Northern Reminiscence)
The newly created fragrance “Kita no Tsuioku” was composed by using AI to interpret research papers on olfaction and memory, together with written contributions from current students. It is blended exclusively from carefully selected 100% natural essential oils, including several oils produced in Hokkaido, using CODE Meee’s patented technology.
For the scent presentation, we used wooden diffusers made from Hokkaido-grown Todomatsu (Sakhalin fir), allowing the many visitors to the photo exhibition to experience the fragrance of “Kita no Tsuioku.”
On the Day
The ceremony was open not only to stakeholders from Japan and abroad but also to the general public, and the venue was bustling with a great many visitors. We were honored to receive many warm comments from those who experienced the fragrance, making this a truly memorable project.
We will continue to explore the potential of scent to accompany memory and emotion, and to bring color to the world through the power of fragrance.
